Discover the Fishermen’s Neighbourhood of Es Portitxol

written by Es Príncep / June 25, 2024

In Mallorquín, the language of the island, "portitxol" means little port or small harbour. The name perfectly suits this tiny old fishermen’s neighbourhood, which you can reach on foot from Es Príncep if you like.

The walk to the port runs along the sea and the beach. Here, you’ll find people engaging in all sorts of sports, from skating, urban cycling, and running to people and children relaxing on the beach or enjoying a drink at the numerous establishments along the way.

During the journey, of no more than a kilometre, you’ll pass the facade of Palma, the Congress Palace, and discover paths and places you’d never have guessed.

Es Portitxol, the Fishermen’s Neighbourhood Adapted to Modernity

One of the biggest attractions of this small port is the promenade that connects the fishing village with the Es Molinar neighbourhood and Palma. It also leads towards Ciudad Jardín and El Arenal. About 16 kilometres of coastline where, wherever you go, you’ll find sea, beach, and plenty of places to sit down for a drink.

Ses Palmeres is the little port beach, very shallow and quite calm. There are no loungers or umbrellas for rent on its sand, but you can always settle for a while at one of the bars or restaurants behind the promenade.

If you walk, you’ll see the small white or stone houses with typical Mallorcan shutters, giving the impression of a postcard-perfect village.

What to Do in Es Portitxol

You can eat, drink, swim, and walk... but also, for the braver ones, rent some skates or take a ride on a skateboard. For the less adventurous, there are always options like cycling or renting a Segway, a comfortable single-person vehicle to explore the paths of this area.

The nightlife in Portitxol is also legendary. The pleasant summer temperature makes it a popular choice for watching the sunset, but also for dining or having drinks before retiring.

Walking or exercising at night, especially on the hottest days, is another option to consider, with the reward being a nighttime dip in the sea.

Es Carnatge, the Dog-Friendly Beach

Following the same path from Portitxol, there is a beach called Es Carnatge, where dogs have been allowed to swim for several years. Therefore, it’s not unusual to see dogs with their humans enjoying the sea and waves and running along the beach.

It is recommended to wear hard-soled shoes that can get wet because there are some rocky sections, which don’t affect the animals but can be tricky for people.

And after the swim, you’ll also find pet-friendly establishments around here where you can go with your four-legged friends for a well-deserved refreshment or a bite to eat.

Can you think of a better plan, with or without dogs?
