With an unparalleled location above the Baluard del Príncep, we felt it was only fitting to name our hotel after the Prince who oversaw the walls’ contruction and later reigned under the name of Felipe II. As a deeply-rooted Mallorcan family we also felt compelled to enhance the hotel’s boutique-style luxury with lashings of the authentically Mallorcan, as evident in our décor, architecture and atmosphere.
In Roman, Arab and medieval times, districts were divided by the city’s various guilds and Es Princep is located in what used to be the local tanners’ area. In fact, age-old parts which were used to process animal hides were discovered exactly where the hotel now stands. These marvelous finds, now artfully displayed, are unique remains from Palma’s medieval age.
Palma de Mallorca, founded by the Romans in 123 BC, was once heavily fortified. When the town grew beyond the ancient Roman wall in the 11th Century, a new wall was built, which surrounded an area now known as the city’s Casco Antiguo or Old Town. From the many ancient ‘Baluards’ only the Baluard de Sant Pere and the Baluard del Príncep still stand. What’s more, the impressive Baluard del Príncep, stoic reminder of a bygone era, is located, quite literally, on our doorstep.
