Manor House Courtyards Palma

The Six Most Beautiful Manor House Courtyards in Palma

written by Es Príncep / October 16, 2023

Throughout the centuries, Palma has preserved one of the most emblematic features of the early Renaissance splendor, the courtyards of manor houses.

In the old town, you can occasionally find these places, often behind majestic wrought-iron gates, which played a significant role in the layout of the small palaces that once shaped the city.

The oldest courtyards date back to the 14th and 15th centuries, belonging to houses of the high nobility, wealthy and influential merchants, the local aristocracy influenced by the Catalan fashion, as well as clergy, officials, and middle-class professionals.

All these courtyards share a similar structure: a rather austere façade without excessive ornamentation, an entrance door or vestibule, and the courtyard itself. The courtyard was an open space with arches, columns, capitals, and grand staircases leading to a gallery, granting access to the interior of the house.

Here are some of the most beautiful manor house courtyards you can visit in Palma.

Six Manor House Courtyards in Palma Worth Visiting:

  • 1.Cal Marqués de la Torre

This manor house is currently the headquarters of the College of Architects. Its library, remodeled and modernized, is a true luxury, but the courtyard has a special charm. It was adapted to the walls of Palma in its day and features a 19th-century elliptical staircase, which is an architectural marvel.

  • 2.Can Balaguer

Also known as the "Grand Courtyard of Palma," this is one of the courtyards that best preserves its palatial aura and splendor in the city. It is a must-visit because it is the only one that retains its original furniture. Currently, exhibitions and markets are held here, adding to its allure.

  • 3.Can Vivot

It's one of the most spectacular courtyards in Palma, although not open to the public. Nevertheless, it's not surprising to see people peeking through the street-facing grilles to admire its beauty. From the 19th century onwards, courtyards began to be adorned with large green-leaved plants, providing a refreshing ambiance, and Can Vivot is a good example of this.

  • 4.Can Bordills

It now houses the Municipal Archive of Palma, making it possible to visit this courtyard, which is also one of the oldest in the city. The manor house was built on the remains of a Muslim construction in the 13th century. In the mid-20th century, the courtyard was reconstructed, and the opportunity was taken to design and construct the staircase, which is now one of the most eye-catching features.

  • 5.Casal Solleric

This wonderful courtyard, located in the city center, is the most elegant of them all. The facilities can be visited, and it's highly recommended to explore the contemporary art exhibitions held here. Furthermore, it retains some rooms with their original furniture and décor. The courtyard features beautiful, lowered arches and imperial-style staircases, providing it with an unmistakable touch of distinction.

  • 6.Can Oleza

You cannot enter, but, as in the case of Can Vivot, you can observe its structure from the exterior. Dating back to the 17th century, it stands out for its exquisite Ionic columns, highly lowered arches, almost seemingly impossible, which significantly lighten the structure, and the grand staircase with a beautifully wrought iron railing.

In Palma, there are various routes to visit the courtyards of these small palaces. All you need to do is choose one and enjoy a walk filled with explanations and anecdotes.
