The Olivar Market: A Place to Enjoy the Best Products
A market is a space that evokes childhood memories, of grandmothers with their wicker baskets and checkered fabric lining, of wheeled carts, gatherings, and greetings, of the aroma of fresh fruit and bread, and of conversations among regulars over their first morning coffee, lunchtime beer, or afternoon snack.
At Es Príncep, we always recommend visiting the most emblematic and interesting places in Palma, and today we want to focus on the Olivar Market.
The Olivar Market, located in the historic center of Palma.
The Olivar Market was built in 1951 in a beautiful building with Mediterranean architecture. It consists of two perpendicular converging aisles that open their arms in a clear plaza, inviting you to spend some time.
The market gets its name not from the typical Mallorcan olive trees, but from the convent of the Olivar nuns, which was located in the same place. When they moved to Inca, the space became available for the construction of a market that would bear the name that had been carried by the nuns' house for centuries.
Over the years, the building needed to be renovated and remodeled, so modernization works were carried out, which were completed in 2003. At this point, the different guilds of fishmongers, butchers, fruits, and vegetables regrouped to occupy their own spaces, well-structured and interconnected.
The markethad become a modern place, with comfortable and simple accesses, making the most of natural light and automating escalators and doors.
The culinary offerings of the Olivar Market.
The gastronomic offer of the Olivar Market is diverse and abundant. Besides being a meeting and shopping place for the necessary products for the week, you can find almost everything here.
Fruits and vegetables from the land or from beyond the seas, fresh fish from the market or fish farms, meats of the highest quality, and sausages, cheeses, and cold cuts from the islands and other parts of the world.
For those looking for spices for cooking or making infusions, there is a varied and charming offer. There are also liquor stores, wineries, household or pet supplies shops, cleaning, pastry, and bakery...
And much more.
At the Olivar, the gastronomic offer caters to all tastes. Stalls where you can taste a plate of oysters with a glass of white wine, places where sushi is prepared on the spot to be paired with sake or champagne, bars where you can have an Extremaduran tapa accompanied by red wine or beer, and even a typical Korean stall that serves take-out food and is very popular.
And to ensure we lack nothing after our visit, there are various services such as florists, press, hairdressing, library, or daycare, among many others.
Markets are part of the heart of cities. Spending a morning in one of them is one of the best plans there is. Would you like to know about other options?
