Experience Easter Week in Palma in a 5-star hotel
In Mallorca, Easter Week is like a prelude to the summer holidays. It's a time to spend in Palma, enjoying the processions and cultural activities organized from the Cathedral, but also to start making the most of the first, timid, rays of sunshine - depending on which month the holiday falls in.
Moreover, it's almost mandatory to stroll along the walls of Palma, cycle to Portitxol, or wander through the old town. At Es Príncep, we suggest these and many more plans if you've decided to visit Mallorca and stay at a fantastic five-star hotel.
To experience Easter Week in Palma: the processions
This year, Easter Week is celebrated between Sunday, March 24th and Sunday, March 31st.
During the main days, there will be processions and commemorative rituals in all the towns of Mallorca, but if you're going to be in Palma, you can't miss these:
- -Palm Sunday marks the beginning of these celebrations, during which tradition dictates that palms are blessed in parishes and churches, to conjure up good wishes in homes.
- -Throughout the week, there are processions throughout the city, but one of the most important days is Maundy Thursday when thousands of people gather in the streets of downtown Palma to see the processions of Christ of the Blood. All the brotherhoods participate, each identifiable by their tunics and hoods, and the religious statues they carry, accompanied by bands. This procession ends after midnight and is one of the most anticipated due to its cultural and folkloric display and the feelings it arouses in the faithful.
- -Good Friday sees a reenactment of the Passion on the steps of the Cathedral of Palma at noon, followed by the procession of the Holy Burial. It's another of the most anticipated events, also gathering thousands of people interested in participating in these acts.
- -Easter Sunday is the culmination of the festivities. In homes, traditional lamb pastries are eaten, prepared by the family in the days before. Dessert usually consists of crespells, star-shaped, heart-shaped, flower-shaped, or various animal-shaped cookies that children typically cut out with special molds, and robiols, sweets filled with cottage cheese, angel hair, jam, or chocolate, depending on how innovative each household is.
It's also the day when godparents give their godchildren "Mona," a traditional gift. Traditions are very broad, and some come directly from Catalonia, but in all of them, eggs and chocolate are the protagonists, to the delight of the little ones.
This day is also experienced on the streets. Easter Sunday is when the Procession of the Holy Encounter takes place, in which the Virgin receives the resurrected Jesus.
Vacation Week and Angel Sunday
The following week is a holiday for children and students. So, it's not unusual to see families strolling through Palma and enjoying the shop windows or taking a walk along the bay to enjoy the glimmers of the sea.
For those with a babysitter, we advise you to visit the Rooftop at Es Príncep to witness one of the best sunsets in Mallorca.
Angel Sunday marks the end of Easter and the holidays. Tradition has it that it was the day when bread was distributed among the poor, but today, neighbors and visitors to Palma come on a pilgrimage to Bellver Castle to share an outdoor meal, specially made up of everything enjoyed in homes the previous week.
